The
War Memorial in Sunderland's Mowbray Park (1)
Photo : Edward Nicholl
Sunderland's War Memorial is situated in the centre of the City, in Mowbray Park beside the library and art gallery and almost opposite the Civic Centre. The memorial is a monument with the figure of Victory holding a wreath set on a tall column, a plinth with wreaths carved on each face and a base. The whole is approached by a flight of steps to an asphalt surround encircled by a small, curved wall of remembrance.
The names of those from Sunderland who lost their lives in the First World War are not found on or near this memorial. There didn't appear to be any central record of First World War casualties until recently.
In the late 1990s a Mr Roland Riddell compiled a Book of Remembrance. This
book was dedicated to the memory of his daughter, Susan, who died in 1996
aged 30. Three copies of this Book of Remembrance were produced, and were
donated to
1. The Mayor of Sunderland (presented on 11 November 2000)
2. The City Library, and
3. Holy Trinity Church (old parish church), dedicated by the Lord Bishop of
Durham on 10 May 2001.
However, on closure of the parish church, the third copy of the Book of Remembrance was transferred to The Donnison School Heritage and Education Centre, Church Walk, Sunderland SR1 2BJ.
The North
East War Memorials Project website has photos of the Book of Remembrance,
and has transcribed the names of those commemorated.
Over 7000 names are commemorated. The names of 222 soldiers from Sunderland
who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are shown on pages 72 - 77.
29 soldiers who were originally in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated
on pages 78 - 181.
2 Officers of the regiment are commemorated on pages 182-190.
A list of all names, arranged aplhabetically, is also provided as an Index.
For further details on each name, select the initial letter above the list
of surnames to be taken to another page which contains data on men whose surname
starts with that letter.
Names in italics are those of soldiers who were originally in the Yorkshire
Regiment.
