It was retaken in the following September. Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension was begun by German troops, who buried immediately to the North of the Communal Cemetery. It was developed in October and November 1918, by the 41st, 48th, 53rd and 58th Casualty Clearing Stations, and it was completed after the Armistice by the concentration of British and German graves from the country North, East and South of Roisel.

Buried in LE TREPORT MILITARY CEMETERY.
During the First World War, Le Treport was an important hospital centre. No.3 General Hospital was established there in November 1914, No.16 General Hospital in February 1915, No.2 Canadian General Hospital in March 1915, No.3 Convalescent Depot in June 1915 and Lady Murray's B.R.C.S. Hospital in July 1916. These hospitals contained nearly 10,000 beds.

No.47 General Hospital arrived in March 1917 and later that year, a divisional rest camp and a tank training depot were established in the neighbourhood. By March 1919, the hospitals had been closed and Le Treport became the headquarters of the 68th Division, which re-formed there before going to the Rhine. The divisional supply depot was closed in June 1919.

There are now 445 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery. Three of the four Second World War burials are unidentified. .

Buried BOULOGNE EASTERN CEMETERY.
The cemetery is a large civil cemetery, split in two by the Rue de Dringhen, just south of the main road (RN42) to St Omer. The Commonwealth War Graves plot is located down the western edge of the southern section of the cemetery, with an entrance in the Rue de Dringhen. Unusually, the headstones are laid flat in this cemetery. This is due to the sandy soil.

Boulogne, was one of the three base ports most extensively used by the Commonwealth armies on the Western Front throughout the First World War. It was closed and cleared on the 27 August 1914 when the Allies were forced to fall back ahead of the German advance, but was opened again in October and from that month to the end of the war, Boulogne and Wimereux formed one of the chief hospital areas.

Boulogne Eastern Cemetery contains 5,577 Commonwealth burials of the First World War and 224 from the Second World War. 55 soldiers of the Yorkshire Regiment are buried in the cemetery.

The photo of the headstone is by Chris Weekes (<weebex12@hotmail.com>)to whom we are very grateful. The photo of the cemetery itself is taken from the Commonwealth War Graves Commission website.

Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN.
During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city. Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross and one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever. In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension, where the last burial took place in April 1920.
The cemetery extension contains 8,346 Commonwealth burials of the First World War (ten of them unidentified) and in Block "S" there are 328 from the Second World War (18 of them unidentified).

Private Charles Harold Ingram. 23953. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 14 January 1917. Aged 26.
Born Stillington (Durham), Enlisted Middlesbrough.
Buried DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL.

(Although the CWGC register, SDGW, and the Green Howards Gazette all show him as "H Ingram", his name on the monumental inscription is given as Charles Harold Ingram".)

Buried in DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY
Delville Wood was a tract of woodland, nearly 1 kilometre square, the western edge of which touched the village of Longueval in the Somme. On 14 July 1916 the greater part of Longueval village was taken by the 9th (Scottish) Division and on the 15th, the South African Brigade of that Division captured most of Delville Wood. The wood now formed a salient in the line, with Waterlot Farm and Mons Wood on the south flank still in German hands, and, owing to the height of the trees, no close artillery support was possible for defence.

There are now 5,523 burials and commemorations of the First World War in this cemetery. 3,593 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 27 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of three soldiers buried in Courcelette Communal Cemetery German Extension, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire.

Born Downholme, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Richmond.

Buried in BEDFORD HOUSE CEMETERY
Bedford House, sometimes known as Woodcote House, were the names given by the Army to the Chateau Rosendal, a country house in a small wooded park with moats. Although it never fell into German hands, the house and the trees were gradually destroyed by shell fire. It was used by field ambulances and as the headquarters of brigades and other fighting units, and charcoal pits were dug there from October 1917.

In time, the property became largely covered by small cemeteries; five enclosures existed at the date of the Armistice, but the graves from No.1 were then removed to White House Cemetery, St. Jean, and those from No.5 to Aeroplane Cemetery, Ypres.

In all, 5,139 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War are buried or commemorated in the enclosures of Bedford House Cemetery. 3,011 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials name casualties buried in other cemeteries whose graves could not be found on concentration. Second World War burials number 69 (3 of which are unidentified). There are 2 Germans buried here.

Lieut. W. F. Jelley, M. C. only son of ex-police Sergt. Jelley, of 124 Leopold street, Loughborough. He had been in a critical condition since the date he was wounded 14th August and on October 19th his condition necessitated an operation and he progressed fairly satisfactorily, but three days before his death the leg had to be amputated.
In September 1914, he joined the 8th Leicesters, and in a very short time was promoted to sergeant. On recovering from wounds received in July 1916, he was granted a commission in February 1917. Lieut. Jelley, who was 22 years of age, and a native of Syston, was educated at the Loughborough Intermediate School and latter at the Grammar school, which he attended for five years. Before his death one of the Royal Princes attended at Lieut. Jelley's bedside and read out to him the order conferring upon the wounded hero the award of the Military Cross. The wording was as follows. "On August 14 you showed great courage and initiative in leading your platoon. Though wounded in the head you continued to lead your platoon until you had gained your objective. Later in the day you were again wounded having your right thigh broken. Though in great pain and unable to move you continued to urge on your platoon, and by your example of fortitude kept up the spirits of your men until after dark when you were carried from the field."
