King’s Book of York Heroes
King’s Book of York Heroes

The King’s Book of York Heroes is held in a locked case in York Minster.

The book lists 1,443 men from the City of York who were killed in the First World War.

The King's Book is two feet long and nine inches thick, it weighs nine stones and is one of the largest books on earth. Edwin Ridsdale Tate was commissioned to design the book in 1920.
The cover is sumptuously carved oak. Inside, pages are exquisitely laid out with copperplate edging and there is a lavishly decorated dedication page.
Details of each man listed are accompanied by a photograph of that person.

A transcription of the names commemorated in the book is given on the Imperial War Museum's Register of War Memorials website.
