The War Memorial in Hartlepool Town Centre The War Memorial in Hartlepool Town Centre
(Photo : Edward Nicholl)

The War Memorial for West Hartlepool stands in Hartlepool Town Centre in a pedestrian precinct. The memorial is a column, with the following inscribed on its base;-

1914 - 1919       +       1939 - 1945
IN GRATEFUL REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF THIS TOWN WHO AT THEIR COUNTRY'S CALL LEFT ALL THAT WAS DEAR TO THEM TO HAZARD THEIR LIVES THAT OTHER MIGHT LIVE IN FREEDOM. THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.

Flanking this column, at its base, are twelve bronze panels bearing the names of the men who fell in the First World War. Six panels are facing the main square, and six are at the rear. Approximately 1500 names are to be found on these panels.
Photos of the panels are provided below.

In front of the column, - see photo above, are four square plinths. Each plinth has four bronze panels carrying the names of the men, - and women, of the town who lost their lives in the Second World War.

The names of all those men from the town of Hartlepool who lost their lives in the First World War are also recorded on a Roll of Honour, - a copy of which may be inspected in the Teesside Archives. This Roll of Honour provides not only the name of each man, but his address in Hartlepool, his regiment, and his date of death. The names of the men of the Yorkshire Regiment, which match those on the Memorial, are taken from this Roll of Honour and are shown below.

A transcription of the West Hartlepool Roll of Honour is given on the North EastWar Memorials project website.
