Ouside St. Matthew's Church, Stalling Busk, is a War Memorial in the form of a granite cross. Inside the church building is a Roll of Honour in which those who died and those who served are commemorated. Beside the Roll of Honour is a smaller commemoration on which the names of four (out of the six) who died are commemorated.

Three of those commemorated were soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment, though one of these died after the 1921 "closing date" for official Commonwealth War Graves Commission commemoration.

The names of those who appear on the Stalling Busk War Memorial are;-

From the Craven's Part in the Great War website the following article from the Craven Herald of 23 March 1917 is given;-

AYSGARTH - MILITARY MEDAL

Lance-Corporal T.M. Coates, of Marsett, Bainbridge, has been awarded the Military Medal for bravery when taking part in a bombing raid in France in June last. Later Lance-Corporal Coates got terribly wounded on the Somme. He had got in the enemy trenches when a Boche threw a bomb, hitting him below the right eye. It was too near to explode in his face, but it burst under his feet. He had the satisfaction of knowing he killed his enemy at the point of the bayonet. Lance-Corporal Coates was in Rouen Hospital eleven weeks, where he underwent four operations, and since his removal to an English Hospital in December last he has undergone more operations. His friends in Wensleydale will be glad to know he is now progressing favourably.

On another page in Craven's Part in the Great War website, a silk bookmark for Thomas Coates' funeral is shown.
This shows that Thomas Coates dies on 18 January 1925 in his 32nd year, and was buried in Stalling Busk on 21 January 1925.
