  2nd Lieutenant Thomas Herbert McINTOSH

Stuart McIntosh (<stu_mc40@yahoo.com>) has provided this photo and fascinating information on his grandfather, Thomas Herbert McIntosh;-

On 07/03/1911 Tom was appointed manager of Middlesborough Football Club. His first season in charge saw ‘Boro finish sixth in the First Division. The next season they finished 3rd, which is still the highest the Club has ever finished.

War broke out in 1914, and the following year Tom joined the 12th Service Battalion of the Yorkshire Regiment, known as the Teesside Pioneers. (He is shown in the Green Howards Gazette as having the Service Number 19960, and having the rank of Lance Serjeant). He was just short of his 36th birthday.

Before long he was promoted to Company Quarter Master Sergeant. On 30 Sugust 1915 Tom married his second wife, Betsy Thompson in Middlesbrough. In January 1916 Tom’s company landed in France.

He later received his commission (29/01/1917), becoming a 2nd Lieutenant and was mentioned in despatches twice.

After being demobilized Middlesbrough FC won the Northern Victory League but, on 30/10/1919 Tom resigned as manager of Middlesborough. He became Secretary-Manager of Everton FC and is the man who signed Dixie Dean. Tom died in post in 1935

The following supplemental information has been provided by a descendant, Howard Palmer (<HPalmer@2tg.co.uk>);-
".....Robert Henry Middleditch, .. was wounded and taken prisoner at Ypres on 30th October 1914.
Apparently his wounds were severe, and so, instead of being held in Germany he was repatriated (or transpatriated) to Switzerland, where he remained for the rest of the war at a hospital in Murren. His family (Father, mother and 2 sisters) were able to visit him for Christmas 1917 and the family still retains a silver cream jug which was won by one of the sisters in the Murren Christmas toboggan race!"

John George Morley was born in 1887.
He had joined the TA before the outbreak of the War, and enlisted in the 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment on 4th September 1914.
He did not leave for the Front until July 1917, possibly because as a CSM he would have had responsibility for training new soldiers.
In May 1918 he was captured by the Germans, and interned in Crossen am den Oder.
At the end of the War he was repatriated, but spent much time in hospitals.
He died in Stockton-on-Tees in 1963.

For a very full account of his life and military career, select the link below. (NB. This is a 1 Mb PDF format file). We are extremely grateful to Graham Morley (<grmorley@hgbmotorcycles.co.uk>) for providing the photographs and for the research into the life and career of his grandfather, CSM Morley.
