Roisel town was occupied by British troops in April 1917, and evacuated after a strong defence by the 66th (East Lancashire) Division in the evening of the 22nd March 1918. It was retaken in the following September. Roisel Communal Cemetery Extension was begun by German troops, who buried immediately to the North of the Communal Cemetery. It was developed in October and November 1918, by the 41st, 48th, 53rd and 58th Casualty Clearing Stations, and it was completed after the Armistice by the concentration of British and German graves from the country North, East and South of Roisel.

There are now 877, 1914-18 war casualties commemorated in this site. Of these, 120 are unidentified and special memorials are erected to 12 soldiers from the United Kingdom and one from Australia who are known or believed to be buried among them.

The photograph of Colonel Charlton's headstone has been provided by Steve Rodgers of the War Graves Photographic Project.

Buried in LE TREPORT MILITARY CEMETERY.
During the First World War, Le Treport was an important hospital centre. No.3 General Hospital was established there in November 1914, No.16 General Hospital in February 1915, No.2 Canadian General Hospital in March 1915, No.3 Convalescent Depot in June 1915 and Lady Murray's B.R.C.S. Hospital in July 1916. These hospitals contained nearly 10,000 beds.

No.47 General Hospital arrived in March 1917 and later that year, a divisional rest camp and a tank training depot were established in the neighbourhood. By March 1919, the hospitals had been closed and Le Treport became the headquarters of the 68th Division, which re-formed there before going to the Rhine. The divisional supply depot was closed in June 1919.

There are now 445 Commonwealth burials of the First World War in the cemetery. Three of the four Second World War burials are unidentified. .

The photos of the headstone and the cemetery are by Linda Lear (<linda@lear20.eclipse.co.uk>), to whom we are very grateful

Private Leonard Garton. 78970. Private Leonard Garton. 78970. 1st/7th Battalion Durham Light Infantry, formerly 37423 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Richard and Elizabeth Garton, of 40, Radford Boulevard, Nottingham. Killed 30 March 1918. Aged 30.
Born Nottingham, Enlisted Nottingham.

Buried in ST. SEVER CEMETERY EXTENSION, ROUEN.
During the First World War, Commonwealth camps and hospitals were stationed on the southern outskirts of Rouen. A base supply depot and the 3rd Echelon of General Headquarters were also established in the city. Almost all of the hospitals at Rouen remained there for practically the whole of the war. They included eight general, five stationary, one British Red Cross and one labour hospital, and No. 2 Convalescent Depot. A number of the dead from these hospitals were buried in other cemeteries, but the great majority were taken to the city cemetery of St. Sever. In September 1916, it was found necessary to begin an extension, where the last burial took place in April 1920.
The cemetery extension contains 8,346 Commonwealth burials of the First World War (ten of them unidentified) and in Block "S" there are 328 from the Second World War (18 of them unidentified).

Private Charles Harold Ingram. 23953

DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY
Private Charles Harold Ingram. 23953. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 14 January 1917. Aged 26.
Born Stillington (Durham), Enlisted Middlesbrough.
Buried DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY, LONGUEVAL.

(Although the CWGC register, SDGW, and the Green Howards Gazette all show him as "H Ingram", his name on the monumental inscription is given as Charles Harold Ingram".)

Buried in DELVILLE WOOD CEMETERY
Delville Wood was a tract of woodland, nearly 1 kilometre square, the western edge of which touched the village of Longueval in the Somme. On 14 July 1916 the greater part of Longueval village was taken by the 9th (Scottish) Division and on the 15th, the South African Brigade of that Division captured most of Delville Wood. The wood now formed a salient in the line, with Waterlot Farm and Mons Wood on the south flank still in German hands, and, owing to the height of the trees, no close artillery support was possible for defence.

There are now 5,523 burials and commemorations of the First World War in this cemetery. 3,593 of the burials are unidentified but there are special memorials to 27 casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials record the names of three soldiers buried in Courcelette Communal Cemetery German Extension, whose graves were destroyed by shell fire.

The photos of the headstone and the cemetery are by Linda Lear (<linda@lear20.eclipse.co.uk>), to whom we are very grateful

Lance Corporal George Jefferson, 14492

BEDFORD HOUSE CEMETERY
Lance Corporal George Jefferson, 14492. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Jane Jefferson, of Downholme, Richmond, Yorks. Killed 26 September 1917. Aged 22.
Born Downholme, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Richmond.

Buried in BEDFORD HOUSE CEMETERY
Bedford House, sometimes known as Woodcote House, were the names given by the Army to the Chateau Rosendal, a country house in a small wooded park with moats. Although it never fell into German hands, the house and the trees were gradually destroyed by shell fire. It was used by field ambulances and as the headquarters of brigades and other fighting units, and charcoal pits were dug there from October 1917.

In time, the property became largely covered by small cemeteries; five enclosures existed at the date of the Armistice, but the graves from No.1 were then removed to White House Cemetery, St. Jean, and those from No.5 to Aeroplane Cemetery, Ypres.

In all, 5,139 Commonwealth servicemen of the First World War are buried or commemorated in the enclosures of Bedford House Cemetery. 3,011 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties known or believed to be buried among them. Other special memorials name casualties buried in other cemeteries whose graves could not be found on concentration. Second World War burials number 69 (3 of which are unidentified). There are 2 Germans buried here.

The photos of the headstone and the cemetery are by Linda Lear (<linda@lear20.eclipse.co.uk>), to whom we are very grateful
