The First World War Memorial in St. Clement's Church, Scarcroft
Road (York) is a wall mounted rectangular bronze plaque mounted onto a hopton
wood stone backboard with dedicatory inscription carved above and below the
plaque.
157 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.
2 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the
memorial.
2nd Lieutenant Horace Acomb. 11th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,
attached to the 2nd Battalion Devonshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth
Acomb, of 3, South Parade, York. Killed 21 August 1916. Aged 23.
Buried VERMELLES BRITISH CEMETERY.
The following biographical information is taken from Robert Coulson's Biographies
of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Horace Acomb was born in the city of York in 1894.
He served with the 2nd Battalion of the Yorkshires but was attached to the
2nd Battalion of the Devonshire regiment when he was killed.
The Devons had been involved in the early stages of the Somme battles and
were then moved up to the Loos sector in late July 1916.
2nd Lt Horace Acomb was killed in action on August 21st 1916 aged 23 after
a mine explosion in the Hulluch area as the battalion worked to clear the
saps and dig out their buried comrades."
Private Frederick Colley. 25691. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of John Colley, of York. Died 13 April 1918. Aged 33.
Born York, Enlisted York, Resided Askham Richard (York).
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
