The War Memorial for the Refuge Assurance Company is situated In the grounds of Fulshaw Hall, Wilmslow, Cheshire. The memorial commemorates the employees of the Company who lost their lives in both World Wars.

7 men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial. Unfortunately, as there is no indication as to the region in which the men worked for the Company, one of the Yorkshire Regiment names (William Bell) cannot be fully identified (see below).


Private John William Beaver. 243624. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 24 March 1918.
Born Melton Mowbray.
Commemorated on Panel 31 and 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.

Private William Bell.
Six men with this name who served in the Yorkshire Regiment and lost their lives were;-
Privates William Bell (16679), William Bell (22726), William Bell (33052), William Armstrong Bell (27274), William Beswick Bell (7027), and William Henry Bell (21190). There was also a Private Willie Bell (33749).

Private William Valance Bond. 41625. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 16064 R F A. Son of William V. and E. Bond, of 18, Norris Bank Terrace, Didsbury Rd., Stockport. Killed 14 August 1917. Aged 19.
Enlisted Manchester, Resided Stockport.

Private Thomas William Kidd, 30996. 16th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, transferred to Labour Corps. Husband of Sarah Ann Kidd, of 9, Clarence Terrace, Willington, Co. Durham. Killed 8 September 1917. Aged 36.
Born Willington (Durham), Enlisted Bishop Auckland (Durham), Resided Willington (Durham).
Buried MENDINGHEM MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Samuel Lane. 26552. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Maria Lane, of 44, Queen St., South Bank, Middlesborough. Died 18 August 1916. Aged 26.
Born South Bank (Yorks), Enlisted Middlesbrough, Resided South Bank.
Commemorated Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private William George Riley. 30395. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Edith Riley, of 3, Costa St., Parliament Rd., Middlesbrough. Native of Middlesbrough. Died 2 April 1917. Aged 38.
Born Middlesbrough, Enlisted Middlesbrough.
Buried HENIN CRUCIFIX CEMETERY.

Lance Corporal George John Weston. 3/8830. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 July 1916.
Born Southwick (Sunderland), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Southwick.
Buried FRICOURT NEW MILITARY CEMETERY.
