The War Memorial for Wigan is a "Market 'Eleanor' Cross". This is octagonal in plan with metal panels listing the dead on the plinth. Angels with wreaths placed above pinnacles.

A page from the booklet produced for the unveiling of the memorial is shown below. This booklet lists the commemorated names under the regiments served in. (Though for the Yorkshire Regiment only 3 of the names are shown).
1800 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.

A document of names on Wigan Council owned war memorials lists 5 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment as being on the Wigan War Memorial.


Private John Cook. 3496. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 15 September 1916.
Born Wigan (Lancs), Enlisted Whitby, Resided Staithes.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private John Mahoney. 238027. Depot the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Mary Mahoney; husband of Ellen Mahoney, of 24, Lyon St., Wallgate, Wigan. Born at Wigan. Died at home 9 April 1920. Aged 30.
Born Wigan.
Buried WIGAN CEMETERY.

Private John McCormick. 16891. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Samuel McCormick. Killed 22 August 1915. Aged 19.
Born Maryport, Enlisted Durham, Resided Daisy Hill (Durham).
Commemorated on Panels 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Sapper Michael Regan. 82680. 174th Tunnelling Coy. Royal Engineers, formerly 8861 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Anthony and Margaret Regan, of Ballyglass, Charlestown, Co. Mayo. Killed 1 November 1915. Aged 38.
Born Charlestown (Co. Mayo), Enlisted Wigan (Lancs), Resided Charlestown (Co. Mayo).
Buried POINT 110 OLD MILITARY CEMETERY.

Private Samuel Smith. 35363. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 39714 72nd T R Battn. Son of William and Mary Smith, of 37, Leader St., Wigan. Killed 11 April 1918. Aged 18.
Born Wigan (Lancs), Enlisted Wigan (Lancs).
Buried CROIX-DU-BAC BRITISH CEMETERY.
