The First World War Memorial Plaque in St. Mary's Church, West
Rainton is 3 feet high x 4 feet 6 inches wide. It is in three separate panels,
the central panel has a flattened dome at the top. There is a wide edge of
brown mottled marble which also divides the three panels vertically.
The two outer panels bear mosaics of St.George and St.Alban.
The central panel of white marble has a cross at centre top with palm leaves.
The names are listed in three columns.
51 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. A transcription of all the names can be found on the website for the North East War Memorials Project website.
6 men who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.
Private Joseph Brown. 19315. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son
of Robert and Catherine Brown, of 27, East Rainton, Fence Houses, Co. Durham.
Killed 5 November 1918. Aged 22.
Born East Rainton (Durham), Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided West Rainton.
Commemorated on Panel 5, VIS-EN-ARTOIS MEMORIAL.
Private John Middleton. 30709. 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment,
formerly 20246 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and Agnes Middleton, of
8, Anderson St., Leamside, Co. Durham. Killed 25 April 1918. Aged 19.
Born West Rainton (Co. Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Leamside (Co. Durham).
Commemorated Panel 47 to 48 and 163A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private Walter Scott. 45006. 13th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Caroline Scott, of 7, West Row, Middle Rainton, Fence Houses, Co. Durham,
and the late Thomas Scott. Died 13 April 1918. Aged 19.
Born Shincliffe, Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided Middle Rainton.

Private Isaac Smith, 18919. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Margaret Wilkinson (formerly Smith), of 4, West Row, Freehold,
Leamside, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Died at home 24 September 1916. Aged 22.
Born Sherburn Hill (Durham), Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided Leamside.
Buried ORPINGTON ALL SAINTS CHURCHYARD EXTENSION.

Private John Warin, 18317. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Husband of Margaret Warin, of 34, South View, Colliery Row, Fence Houses.
Died of wounds, at home, 7 September 1916. Aged 32.
Born Richmond (Yorks), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Leaveside (Durham).

Private John Wilson. 16980.
10th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late John George Wilson.
Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 22.
Born Shilton Moor (Durham), Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided High Moorsey
(Hetton-le-Hole).
Buried DOUCHY-LES-AYETTE BRITISH CEMETERY.
