The First World War Memorial Cross in West Harton's Methodist Church

The Methodist Church in West Harton (South Shields) is located at the junction of Boldon lane and Harton Lane.
The First World War Memorial for West Harton's Methodist Church is a fleury cross on square pillar with incised inscription, mounted on square three-stepped base on which the names are incised. Letters 'IHS', intertwined, are inscribed in a diamond-shaped frame in the centre of the cross piece.
16 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. A transcription of the names commemorated is on the Imperial War Museum's Register of War Memorials website.

Born Bebside, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Harton Colliery (Co Durham).
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
The following biographical information is shown in the South
Shields Boys High School website;-
"Thomas Henry Rutherford was the son of Henry and Elizabeth Rutherford.
His father is described as a Bank Inspector ("at Colliery looking after
traffic and cleaning coal"). At the time he was at the school they lived
for some time in the office buldings at Harton Colliery.
