The Thornton (Bradford) War Memorial is located in Thornton Cemetery, overlooking the Thornton Road (B6145).

The memorial is a figure of Victory with head bowed and arms outstretched, holding a wreath in each hand. This figure stands on a square plinth and two-stepped base. The dedication is on the Southern face of the plinth.
The commemorations are on plaques attached to the Eastern, Western, and Southern faces of the plinth.

The website "All About Thornton" has a detailed description of the memorial, including a list of all the names commemorated together with biographical information.

142 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 32 in the Second World War.

2 of those commemorated were soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.


2nd Lieutenant Benjamin Sydney Appleyard. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Jane Ann Appleyard, of 233, Hall Lane, Bradford. Killed 29 September 1918. Aged 27.
Buried CHAPEL CORNER CEMETERY, SAUCHY-LESTREE.
The following notes on Lieutenant Appleyard are from Robert Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Benjamin Appleyard was born in Bradford on May 3rd 1891.
He served in the ranks of the West Yorkshire Regiment fighting on the Somme in 1916 where he was wounded in action at Guillemont.
He was commissioned in August 1917 and was wounded again at Lens in November of that year.
Benjamin Appleyard was posted to the 2nd Yorkshires on May 16th 1918 while the battalion was at Mazingarbe.
2nd Lt Benjamin Appleyard was killed in action during the battalion’s assault on Epinoy on September 29th 1918 at the age of 27, the battalion suffering heavy gas shelling and machine gun fire that day."

Private Harold Ernest Drasdo. 48090. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly TR/5/30492 15th T R Battn. Killed 21 March 1918.
Born Bradford, Enlisted Bradford.
