The First World War Memorial for Thoralby is a brass plaque
in a wooden frame. The memorial is kept in Thoralby's Village Hall.
Thoralby is a village just South of Aysgarth.
6 names are commemorated, including 4 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private James Bell Fawcett, 32973. 8th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of the late Robert and Ann Fawcett, of Newbiggin, Aysgarth;
husband of Elizabeth Ann Fawcett, of Stanley Cottage, Thoralby, Aysgarth,
Yorks. Killed on 7 June 1917. Aged 38.
Born Aysgarth, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.
Commorated Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
(*)Private Matthew Heseltine, 20348. 6th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Killed on 14 September 1916.
Born Aysgarth, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Born Thornaby, Enlisted Leyburn, Resided Aysgarth.

(SDGW gives place of birth as "Thornaby". This should be "Thoralby".).
Colonel John William Lodge, 3rd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Commanding 2nd (Home Service) Garr. Bn. Son of the late Robert and
Mary Lodge, of Bishopdale, Aysgarth. Commanded 3rd Bn. in the South African
Campaign. Died at home on 23 August 1917. Aged 60.
Buried AYSGARTH (ST. ANDREW) CHURCHYARD.
(*) The two Private Matthew Heseltine soldiers were cousins.
The following article from the Yorkshire Post and Leeds Examiner, dated 30
September 1918, describes an extraordiinary tale;-
"Pte. Matthew Heseltine, Yorks. Regiment, Newbiggin, Aysgarth. Wensleydale,
is reported killed in action on September 16. Another Pte. Matthew Heseltine,
Yorks. Regt., Thoralby, Aysgarth, Wensleydale, cousin to the first-named,
is also reported killed on the 16th. Both enlisted in the same regiment on
the same day, have kept together all the time, and were killed on the same
day. Both were members of a family of ten, and both families consisted of
four boys and six girls."
