The First World War Memorial for Swindon, Wiltshire, is a commemorative
wooden board on which are painted 911 names.
The memorial is located in the Town Hall, which is no longer in use as such.
The main use of the building at the moment is as premises used by Swindon
Dance, a National Dance Agency.
A photo by Jeremy Banning shows the memorial without the reflections that are in the above photo. The names of the Yorkshire Regiment soldiers can be made out more clearly in Jeremy Banning's photo, and we are very grateful for having been given permission to reproduce his photo (below).
3 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the First World War Memorial for Swindon.
Lance Corporal Percy Bowron. 42269. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 183429 R F A. Killed 4 November 1918.
Born Swindon, Enlisted Swindon. Aged 28.
Buried LE CATEAU MILITARY CEMETERY.
(SDGW shows Percy Bowron enlisted in Swindon (Lancs). But from records in
Ancestry.co.uk it would appear that Percy Bowron was born in Swindon (Wiltshire)
in Q2 1890. In the 1891 Census he was living in Swindon (Wiltshire), - his
father was Walter Bowron, Wife Ann, and there were 3 sons and 1 daughter.
In the 1901 census, he is shown as Percy Bowton and living in Swindon (Wilts).
)
Private James Nathaniel Fulker, 42333. 10th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment, formerly 183600 RFA. Killed 11 April 1917.
Born Maidenhead, Enlisted Swindon.
Buried COJEUL BRITISH CEMETERY.
Private Basil Thomas Martin. 9837. 2nd Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William James and Emily Martin, of 20, Avenue Rd.,
Swindon, Wilts. Born at Bicester, Oxon. Killed 1 November 1914. Aged 19.
Born Bicester (Oxford), Enlisted Bristol, Resided Alerchurch (Worcester)
Buried YPRES TOWN CEMETERY EXTENSION.
Private Martin is also commemorated on the War Memorial for
Woodchester (Glos), where his father was employed on an estate in that area.
Although it might be expected that he would be commemorated on the Bicester
War Memorial, that particular memorial has no names shown on it. However,
the November 2014 Newsletter of the Bicester
Historian includes Private Martin's name in a Roll of Honour for men from
Bicester who lost their lives in November 1914. Unfortunately, it is not clear
as to the source of these names.
