The War Memorial for Sutton-on-the-Forest

The Sutton-on-the-Forest War Memorial is situated in All Hallows
Churchyard, Sutton-on-the-Forest,
The memorial is a square sandstone masonry base surmounted by tapering plinth,
shaft and Celtic Cross. The dedication and commemorations are on the sides
of the plinth. A mounted soldier is carved at the foot of the shaft, and sailors
manning a Naval Gun on board ship with an aircraft flying overhead are carved
at the top of the shaft.
14 names are commemorated on the memorial as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 4 in the Second World War.
4 of the names commemorated are soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private George Eastwood. 7257. 1st/9th Battalion Durham Light Infantry,
formerly 28639 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of
Isaac Eastwood, of Grange Cottage, Sutton-on-the-Forest, York. Killed 5 November
1916. Aged 19.
Born Pocklington (Yorks), Enlisted Richmond (Yorks), Resided Easingwold (Yorks).
Commemorated Pier and Face 14 A and 15 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
Private George Hayden, 36079. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Killed 13 October 1916.
Born Haxby (Yorks), Enlisted Easingwold.

of farm labourer Jacob and Elizabeth Hayden all living in Sutton On The Forest
in 1911.")
Private Harold Poppleton. G/52270. 23rd Battalion Middlesex Regiment,
formerly 45445 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 25 March 1918.
Born Bawton (Yorks), Enlisted Easingwold (Yorks), Resided Sutton-on-Forest
(Yorks).
Commemorated on Bay 7, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
Private Arthur Woodliffe. 45591. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of William and Isabella Woodliffe, of Sutton-on-Forest, Easingwold, Yorks.
Killed 12 July 1918. Aged 19.
Born Sutton-on-Forest, Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Easingwold.
Buried CAVALETTO BRITISH CEMETERY.
