The War Memorial for Sutton-on-Hull

The Sutton-on-Hull War Memorial is located in a small enclosure on Church Street to the West of St. James Church.
The memorial is a stone cross on a stone plinth.
The men of Sutton-on-Hull who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the sides of the plinth. 36 names are commemorated.
At the base of the plinth are four tablets which have been newly restored (2018). These tablets commemorate those who lost their lives in the Second World War, as well as those from the parishes of St. Marks, Stoneferry and Wilmington in the First World War.

36 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 20 in the Second World War. The names have been transcribed on the website for the Sutton and Wawne Roll of Honour.

1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the Sutton-on-Hull War Memorial.
Another soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the tablet for St. Marks, Stoneferry and Wilmington, - this tablet effectively being an addendum of names not previously commemorated.

Lance Corporal Thomas Henry Abba. 36281. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 22536 East Yorks Regt. Killed 9 April 1917.
Born Hull, Enlisted Hull.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL
(His younger brother, Harold Abba, who served in the East Yorks Regiment was killed one month later on 3 May 1917 and is also commemorated on the Arras Memorial.)

Private George William Griffin, 36356. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Nephew of Miss A. Davis, of Church St., Sutton, Hull. Killed 11 April 1917.
Born Sutton (Yorks), Enlisted Hull, Resided Sutton-on-Hull.
Buried COJEUL BRITISH CEMETERY, ST.-MARTIN-SUR-COJEUL.
