The First World War Memorial in St. Leonard's Church, Sunningwell,
is a wall mounted, portrait orientated, nowy-headed backboard supporting a
moulded nowy-headed tablet with chamfered sides and base edges. A military
crest and wreath are within the nowy-head.
Immediately beneath this tablet is a smaller landscape orientated, plain World
War 2 memorial tablet incorporating four chamfered edges.
Both tablets bear incised inscriptions and names, infilled with a black enamel
paint.
16 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 5 in the Second World War.
1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial.
2nd Lieutenant George Esmond Haggie, 235467. 9th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Formerly 5207 D L I. Son of the late George Alfred and Ada E. E.
Haggie. Died 2 October 1917. Aged 27.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Oxford, Resided Foxcombe (Berks).
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
George Esmond Haggie is listedby the CWGC and SDGW, and other records, as
being a Private soldier. However, he was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant in the
9th Battalion in June/July 1917.
