Originally this War Memorial was located in St. Patrick's RC Church, Church Street, Sunderland. However, St. Patrick's Church closed in 1985 and the parish was incorporated into that of St Cecilia and St Patrick, Ryhope Road.
The First World War Memorial is a brass plaque in a wood frame.

The plaque is bordered by inter-twined vine leaves.

(It is not certain that the John O'Rourke on the memorial is this particular
soldier. However, in the Register of Soldiers Effects his sole legatee was
a "Catherine Bloomer". In the 1991 Census, the only "Catherine
Bloomer" was a servant girl who lived in Whitburn, Sunderland.)
