The War Memorial for South Hylton is located on Railway Terrace, opposite the junction with Cambria Street.
When first erected there was no housing nearby. The memorial now effectively sits in the front garden of a house on Railway Terrace, and is surrounded by housing.

The memorial stands on a two-stepped base, surmounted by a tapering granite four-sided column. The upper section of the 6 o'clock face has a relief-carved sword, flanked by the dates 1914 1918; the middle section is inscribed with two columns of First World War commemorations (in black upper-case lettering). The lower section has a relief-carved wreath and scroll; beneath that, the upper step is inscribed 'THE GREAT WAR'. The 3 o'clock face of the memorial bears the Second World War dates and a single column of names. The memorial stands within a small area, surrounded by a low brick wall and black wrought-iron railings.

44 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 23 in the Second World War. A transcription of the names is given on the Imperial War Museum's Register of War Memorials website.
