]Sunderland Higher Grade School opened in 1890 near the West Park. In 1905 the Higher Grade School was re-organised as a Secondary School, under the control of a Board of Governors. It was renamed Bede Collegiate School.
The school soon outgrew its original premises and in 1927 the foundation stones were laid for new school buildings on Durham Road. The new premises were officially opened on 19 October 1929.

The First World War Memorial for past pupils of the Bede Collegiate School was moved to the Beded School (now the Bede Cntre), Durham Road, Humbleton, Sunderland.

The memorial contains five bronze panels in an oak frame, with the commemorated names listed in two columns in each frame.

152 names of Old Boys (and 1 Master) are commemorated on the memorial.

3 of the names commemorated are those of Yorkshire Regiment soldiers.


Private Charles Richard Boustead. 27288. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Joseph and Georgina Boustead, of West View, Low Moorsley, Hetton-le-Hole, Co. Durham. Killed 17 August 1916. Aged 18.
Born Ryton-on-Tyne (Northumberland), Enlisted Morpeth.
Commemorated on Panels 44 and 45, LOOS MEMORIAL.

2nd Lieutenant Eric Loftus Perris. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died 27 September 1916.
Buried BECOURT MILITARY CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT.
The following biographical notes are from Robert Coulson's Biographies of Officers of the Yorkshire Regiment;-
"Middlesbrough man Eric Perris first served in the ranks of the West Yorkshire regiment and when commissioned joined the 4th Yorkshires in the Ypres Salient in the spring of 1916.
The battalion moved down to the Somme later in the year and spent late August and early September in training at Millencourt.
On September 14th 2nd Lt Perris and the battalion attacked between High Wood and Martinpuich being relieved on September 19th, “All utterly spent and weary”.
On the night of September 26th the battalion assembled for an attack towards the village of Flers. The attack went in at
11-00pm but due to a mix up in orders the other battalions detailed for the action didn’t move up with the 4th Battalion leaving them exposed to enfilade fire into their flanks.
2nd Lt Eric Loftus Perris was killed in this action in the early hours of September 27th 1916."

Private Harold Peterson. 2407. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 1 May 1915.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Northallerton, Resided Sunderland.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.
(Harold Peterson is also commemorated in the 3rd Draft Roll of Honour 1914-18 July 1915 Bede Collegiate School. This document only commemorates Old Boys of the college who lost their lives up to July 1915 in the First World War. 9 names are commemorated as having died, and 5 as being missing.)
