The Stourbridge War Memorial

The Stourbridge War Memorial is located in the Mary Stevens Park, Love Lane, Stourbridge.

The memorial is a large, tall column, with wreaths and metal plaques with dedication and commmeorations, surmounted by Victory sculpture. The memorial stands on a 3-step base. The commemorations are on bronze, plaques. A Stepped base leads to tall finely moulded cenotaph - like pier with an attached half-pier to sides. Around the plinth are relief and inscription panels. Further tall panels on the sides listing the names of the fallen. Decorative panel to front, lion's head panel at the top of each side half-pier. The memorial is topped by a life-size half-kneeling female figure with flay and with her oustretched arm holding a wreath.

371 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 136 in the Second World War.

1 soldier of the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.


Private John Walsh, 326097. 8th Battalion Royal Scots, formerly 29638 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. T. and Mrs. F. Walsh, of 34, Arnold St., Derby. Died at home 22 April 1917. Aged 18.
Born Starbridge (Derby), Enlisted Derby, Resided Derby.
Buried DERBY (NOTTINGHAM ROAD) CEMETERY.

"In the 1911 Census, his father’s name was Thomas and his mother’s name was Fanny. They were living at 34 Arnold Street, Derby which still exists. The Census informs us that his place of birth was fact Stourbridge in Worcestershire. Despite the family’s move to Derby, John is commemorated on the Stourbridge War Memorial .
According to his pension card he died at home of tuberculous meningitis.")
