The War Memorial for Stanley, Co. Durham, is a granite Celtic Cross on a square pedestal at the top of four steps in St. Andrew's Churchyard. The cross head is elaborately carved with curved sections joining the arms. The front face of the pedestal carries the dedication: "In grateful memory of / all the men belonging to this parish / who gave their lives for their country / in the Great War 1914-1918". / "Their names are recorded in the book / of remembrance kept within this church".

The Book of Remembrance is for the Parish of Beamish is held in an oak case. The Flyleaf of this book is shown in the photo above.

Private John Curry. 20318. 5th Battalion Dorset Regiment, formerly 46683 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas and Mary Curry, of "Greenoak," Eastrington, Brough, Yorks; husband of Selma Curry, of 51, Council St., West Stanley, Co. Durham. Killed 10 August 1918. Aged 27.
Born Cottingham (Yorks), Enlisted Stanley (Durham).
Buried PHILOSOPHE BRITISH CEMETERY, MAZINGARBE.

Private John Henderson, 39174. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mrs. Sarah Ann Henderson, of 4, Gordon Terrace, Shield Row, West Stanley, Co. Durham. Killed 7 June 1917. Aged 25.
