The Stafford town War Memorial sits in a small square in front the County Court Building and the former County Education offices, now a pub. Before the Courts were built the memorial faced the other way, as if marching towards the railway station from which so many would have departed during the war. (The photo below shows the memorial in this context.)

Two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Private Alfred Bragg. 34122. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 21523 North Staffs Regt. Died 11 September 1918.
Born Stafford, Enlisted Stafford.
Buried GLAGEON COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private William Ernest Clarke. 203070. 4th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Edgar and Ada Clarke, of I, Clarke's Court, North Walls, Stafford. Killed 23 April 1917. Aged 26.
Born Stafford (Staffs), Enlisted Stafford, Resided Doxey.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Lieutenant Bertie Charles Peach. 12th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of George Edward and Lucy Peach, of 123, Weston Rd., Stafford. Died 9 April 1918. Aged 25.
Commemorated on Panel 4, PLOEGSTEERT MEMORIAL.
