The First World War Memorial in the Methodist Church, Sowerby

The First World War Memorial for Sowerby's Methodist Church is a brass plaque. The Methodist Church is located in Front Sreet, Sowerby.

53 names are commemorated on the main memorial (the brass plaque, illustrated above).

However, in July 2024 a marble memorial tablet memorial was found propped up in the front of the church. Nothing further is known about this tablet. (see the photo below). 10 names are commemorated on this tablet a shaving lost their lives in the First World War. 8 of these names are found on the brass plaque memorial. Of the other 2 names, one was a soldier who served in the Yorkshire Regiment.

14 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the main (brass plque) memorial, and, as stated above, 1 soldier who served in the Yorkshire Regiment is commmeorated on the marble tablet.

Serjeant Frederick Bendelow. 200088. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 23 April 1917.

Private Thomas William Brown. 25186. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Peter and Christy Brown. His brother Edward also fell. Killed 17 January 1917. Aged 23.

(The Hollybrook Memorial commemorates those lost at sea in Home waters who have no known grave, - particularly those returning in hospital ships which were sunk by mines or torpedoes. Some of the names were burials at sea.
The 1st Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment were stationed in India throughout the First World War. Research by Steve Billings has shown that Private Daynes died on his way out to India on the HMT Sierra Leone. The cause of death was cerebro spinal meningitis.)
