The Friends of Sowerby Bridge unveiled a new bronze memorial plaque in late 2018 that commemorates the fallen of World War One. The plaque was unveile at the Sowerby Bridge Railway tation. The plaque records the names of the 42 former railwaymen based locally at Sowerby Bridge, Greetland, Luddenden Foot and Ripponden who lost their lives in the First World War.

One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial for Sowerby Bridge (Calderdale).


Private Ernest Normanton. 28328. 7th Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 29120 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 13 May 1917. Aged 28.
Born Norland (Yorks), Enlisted Halifax, Resided Sowerby Bridge.
Commemorated Bay 4 and 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
(From the 1911 Census, Ernest Normanton was a Goods Labourer on the railway, aged 22)
