A War Memorial that commemorated the men of Brunswick Street and Wilson Street in South Shields, who served in the First World war, used to be situated in Brunswick Street. It was then moved to the Veterans Club, Frederick Street, before finally coming to be displayed in the Town Hall in South Shields.
35 names are commemorated onn this memorial as having lost their lives in the First World War, but a considerably larger number of names are shown as having served and returned.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this memorial.

6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Jane Eleanor Young, of 99, Leighton
St., South Shields. Killed 27 September 1916. Aged 33.
Born South Shields, Enlisted South Shields.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(The 1911 Census shows that his full name was James William Frances Young,
aged 28. He was a house painted, living at 99 South Woodbine Street, South
Shields. .
The CWGC shows him as being Private James Young, but his Pension Record shows
him as being Lance Corporal James William Frances Young.)
