The First World War Memorial for St. Stephen's Church, South Shields, is a metal plaque mounted on wooden boarding. The commemoratiions are incised in white enamel lettering.

The foundation stone of St. Stephens’ church was laid by Robert Ingham on December 26th, 1844. The church is a stone building in the early English style with dwarf spire. In 1980 the church became a United Benefice with St Aidan. In 1995 the Parishes of St Aidan and St Stephen became The Parish of the Lawe (St Aidan with St Stephen).

229 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial. There is a transcription of these name son the Imperial War Museum's War Memorial Register, as well as on the North East War Memorials Project website.

9 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.

Private Nicholas Austin Hudson. 38712. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Henry Hudson, of 17, Baring St., South Shields, and the late Elizabeth Hudson. Killed 9 October 1918. Aged 28,

Private John Hyder Mawhood. 33991. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly R/4/063027 R A S C. Son of Charles and Mary Mawhood; husband of Septina Mawhood, of 16, Shakespeare St., South Shields. Killed 4 September 1918. Aged 30.

Lance Corporal William Newman. 14394. 1st Battalion Dorsetshire Regiment, formerly 11392 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 3 October 1918.

Private John Slater. 16344. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Elizabeth Slater, of 74, Ellesmere St., South Shields. Killed 14 February 1916. Aged 28.

"In the 1911 Census John Slater and his family were living in Hedley Street, and the 1901 Census shows them living in the Parish of St Stephen. Hedley Street is only a 5 minute or so walk from St Stephen’s Church.")
