The War Memorial for St. Mary's Church, South Shields stands at the junction of South Eldon Street and St. Mary's Terrace. The church itself was demolished in 1982 to make way for housing.
The memorial is a wheel cross mounted on a square base. The commemorations are incised onto the sides of the base. A sword is carved into the front face of the cross.
183 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial, including John Simpson Kirkpatrick, known as 'The Man with the Donkey' at Gallipoli.
