The First World War Memorial in St. Bede's RC Church, South Shields, is a plaque that commemorates 154 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War.

6 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


2nd Lieutenant John William Berryman. 15th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, attached 2nd/4th Battalion KOYLI. Son of John William and Annie Berryman, of 178, Stevenson St., Westoe, South Shields. Killed 27 November 1917. Aged 23.
Commemorated on the CAMBRAI MEMORIAL, LOUVERVAL.
The following notes are taken from Robert Coulson's "Biographies of Officers Died in the Forst World War";-
"John Berryman was born in South Shields in 1895.
He first served in the ranks of the Durham Light Infantry before being commissioned into the 15th Yorkshires.
The life of the battalion was shortlived, however, and it was disbanded and removed from the Army List in December of 1916.
Officers and men were dispersed to other battalions and regiments and 2nd Lt Berryman was attached to the 2/4th battalion King’s Own Yorkshire Light Infantry.
He fought and was wounded with this battalion at the Battle of Cambrai during the capture of Bourlon Wood in November 1917. 2nd Lt John William Berryman died of his wounds on November 27th 1917 aged 23."

Private Patrick Leo Cullen. 39103. 32nd Bde. Machine Gun Corps, formerly 11112 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of J. M. and Ellen Cullen, of Bishop Auckland. Killed 2 October 1916. Aged 25.
Born Bishop Auckland, Enlisted South Shields.
Buried CONTAY BRITISH CEMETERY.

Rifleman Daniel Devine, 40630. 1st Battalion Royal Irish Rifles, formerly 19781 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 14 November 1916.
Enlisted South Shields (Durham).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 15 A and 15 B, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Charlton Waggett Forster. 14486. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late John and Elizabeth Forster, husband of Agnes Forster, of 39, Peel St., South Shields. Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 39.
Born Bensham, Enlisted South Shields.
Buried FRICOURT BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Michael McKenna. 50847. 2nd/9th Battalion Manchester Regiment, formerly 45090 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John and Bridget McKenna, of 32, Derby St., South Shields. KIlled 9 October 1917.
Born South Shields (Durham), Enlisted South Shields.
Commemorated Panel 120 to 124 and 162 to 162A and 163A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.

Serjeant John Watson. 20343. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary and the late Charles Watson, of Jarrow-on-Tyne. Enlisted Feb.,1915. Killed 10 December 1917. Aged 20.
Born Jarrow, Enlisted South Shields.
Buried MONT HUON MILITARY CEMETERY.
