The War Memorial for Skelmanthorpe is situated in Skelmanthorpe Cemetery, at the junction of Busker lane and Highbridge Lane on the outskirts of the village and approximately 8 miles from Huddersfield Town centre.

The memorial is a stone latin cross, with a metal cross attached and set on a pillar, two steps, and a paved base. The pillar has the First World War commemoration plaque attached to the 6 o'clock face while the Second World War commemoration plaque is attached to the top step.

28 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 10 names in the Second World War.

1 soldier who served in the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial.


Private Eric Tunnicliffe. 38126. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Charley and Cinderella Tunnicliffe, of Skelmanthorpe, Huddersfield; husband of Emily Meachen (formerly Tunnicliffe), of 16, Carr Hill, Balby, Doncaster. Killed 1 October 1917. Aged 23.
Born Skelmanthorpe (Yorks), Enlisted Huddersfield, Resided Skelmanthorpe.
Buried LONGUENESS (ST. OMER) SOUVENIR CEMETERY.
