St. Jude's Church, Shieldfield, was closed in the 1970s, but being a Grade 2 Listed Building remains in use (as industrial premises). The War Memorial remains in place.
The First World War Memorial in St. Jude's Church, Shieldfield, is a plaque on a black pattress. The plaque has a raised fluted edge which terminates in prominent corner pieces each of which bears a carved cross. The dedication is carried at the bottom of the plaque. There is a narrow ledge at the bottom. Names are listed in four columns using sans serif lettering with the military honours in red.
105 names are commemorated on the memorial. A transcription can be found on the North East War Memorials Project website.
1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial.
Private Francis Harding Carter, 23230. 8th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Joseph and Mary E. Carter, of 174, Portland Rd.,
Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 8 July 1917. Aged 28.
Born Newcastle, Enlisted Newcastle, Resided Shieldfield (Newcastle).
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION (NORD).
Francis Harding Carter is also remembered on a family headstone in Newcastle (Old Jesmond) Cemetery.
