The First World War Memorial in Selby Abbey consists of wo plaques below the window with the names of those killed in the First World War. Two enamel shields of the coats of arms of Selby and See of Yorkare above the plaques. The window is a four light window and is filled by 2 rows of scenes, 8 in all plus other scenes and figures in the 10 sections of the upper tracery.
Of the 138 names commemorated on the memorial as having lost their lives in the First World War, 4 are those of soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Captain Thomas Huffington. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Maria Huffington, of 14, Westbourne Terrace, Selby, Yorks., and the
late John Huffington. B.A. of Leeds University, at the age of 20. M.A. the
following year. Killed 8 February 1917. Aged 24.
Buried BRONFAY FARM MILITARY CEMETERY.
Private Robert Hobson Lambert. 43563. 17th Battalion the West Yorkshire
Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), formerly 19062 15th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 17 April 1917.
Born Yeadon (Yorks), Enlisted York, Resided Selby (York).
Commemorated Pier and Face 2 A 2 C and 2 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Richard Roberts, (<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>) states that Robert
Hobson Lambert's father was James Robert and his mother was named Ann. In
the Pension Ledger his mother is Ann and her address is Selby. In the 1911
Census records the Lambert family are resident in Selby.)
Private Robert Edward Steward. 241169. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment.
Son of Robert and Annie Elizabeth Steward, of 41, Olympia Cottages, Barlby
Rd., Selby, Yorks. Killed 27 September 1917. Aged 19.
Enlisted Pocklington, Resided Hayton.
Commemorated on Panels 52 to 54 and 162A, TYNE COT MEMORIAL.
Private Robert Stanley Varley. 203448. 1st/4th Battalion York and
Lancaster Regiment, formerly 3290 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Robert and
Sarah Ann Varley, of Selby, Yorks. Killed 21 October 1917. Aged 22.
Enlisted Scarborough (Yorks), Resided Selby (Yorks).
Buried NINE ELMS BRITISH CEMETERY.
