The First World War Memorial in the Church of St. Mary the Virgin, Seaham, is a brown and white alabaster tablet with a fluted frame. The central panel has a border of blue and gold mosaic. At the centre top is a cross incised into the alabaster. The names are listed in two columns. The dedication is in Old English lower case, the names in elaborate Roman and the rest below this is in sans serif capitals. The quotation at the bottom is in sans serif capital italics.

10 names are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War.

3 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Lance Corporal John Douglass. 22810. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Rhoda Bosanquet Douglass. Killed 10 July 1916.
Born Sunderland, Enlisted Deaf Hill, Resided Seaham Harbour.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Thomas Parker. 18413. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 31 July 1917.
Born Seaham Harbour (Durham), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Seaham Colliery.
Commemorated Panel 33, Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial.
(SDGW Gives regimental number as 18473).

Private James William Simpson, 18951. 10th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late James and Jane Simpson, of Seaham Colliery; husband of Mary Ann Simpson of 3 Back, Church St., Seaham Harbour, Co. Durham. Killed 11 April 1917. Aged 29.
Born Hetton-le-Hole, Enlisted Seaham Harbour, Resided New Seaham Colliery.
Buried COJEUL BRITISH CEMETERY, ST. MARTIN-SUR-COJEUL.
(The CWGC register incorrectly lists his Regimental Number as 18351, - the correct number is shown on the headstone)
