Two soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commmeorated in St. Laurence's Church, Scalby. One of these soldiers is commemorated by a memorial window, the other by a family plaque .

A very comprehensive website describes the memorials, and the men commemorated on it. The website provides detailed biographical information on the names commemorated, together with photographs. The principal authors of the website are Lesley Newton and Denise Howell, and they have generously allowed use of material from their website.


Private William Willie Forster. 39017. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Only son of J. H. and M. Forster, of Ivy Dene, Scalby, Scarborough. Killed 3 September 1917. Aged 25.
Born Loftus (Yorks), Enlisted Scarborough.
Buried DUISANS BRITISH CEMETERY, ETRUN.
Shown below is the memorial plaque to William Forster in St. Laurence's Church, erected by his parents.

Major John Jocelyn Doyne Sillery. 11th Bn. Manchester Regiment. Mentioned in Despatches.Son of the late Maj. Gen. C. J. C. Sillery (Suffolk Regt.). Formerly Indian Staff Corps. Killed 7 August 1915. Aged 48.
Commemorated on Panel 159 to 171, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Born at Hobart Town, 5 November 1866, son of Major-General Charles Jocelyn Cecil Silery, formerly of the 12th Foot.
2nd Lieut. 5th February 1887 (Yorkshire Regt.); Lieutenant Indian Army 27 February 1888; Captain 5 February 1898; Major 5 February 1905. Retired 5 February 1912.
