The Ruddington War Memorial is situated adjacent to St. Peter's Churchyard on Church Street in Ruddington. There are 61 names from WW1 commemorated on it including those of Pte Harold Cross and Lieutenant Geoge Graham Hicking of the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private Harold Cross. 30222. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment, formerly
44572 Notts and Derby Regt. Husband of Evelyn Cross, of Wilford Rd., Ruddington,
Notts. Killed 25 April 1917. Aged 26.
Born Ruddington (Notts), Enlisted Nottingham, Resided Ruddington.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
Lieutenant George Graham Hicking. 6th Battalion York and Lancaster
Regiment, formerly 11th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of
Joseph William and Kate Florence Hicking, of Halsey House, Pittville, Cheltenham,
formerly of Ruddington, Notts. His brother Francis Joseph Hicking also fell.
Killed 1 July 1916. Aged 22.
Commemorated on Addenda Panel, Pier and Face 4 C, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
(Lieutenant Hicking was one of a number of 11th Battalion Officers who fought
with other regiments from early 1915 onwards.
His brother, 2nd Lieutenant Francis Joseph Hicking was killed on the same
day aged 19, and is buried in FRICOURT NEW CEMETERY. The name of Francis Joseph
Hicking is also on the memorial.
