The Portsmouth First World War Memorial is an exedra with a
semi-circular screen enclosing a sunken area.
Ten large rectangular plaques bearing the names of the dead are attached to
the inside of the screen. A smaller ornate plaque with an inscription is attached
to the screen at the midpoint. On the screen, above the plaques is an inscription.
There are two round-arched openings in the screen each with wrought-iron gates.
At either end of the screen is a segmental rusticated niche with bronze-painted
urn and stone seat. Above the niche is an ornate carved trophy surmounted
by a crown. In the centre is a cenotaph on three stone steps. The Cenotaph
is surmounted by a Greek cornice and stone casket. Each side has a relief
carving depicting wartime scenes. Small metal plaque on front of cenotaph.
A curved balustrade partially encloses the front.
The entrance is flanked by stone pedestals, each with seated sculptural figure.
To the south is a sailor with Lewis gun and to the north is a soldier with
Vickers gun.
