The War Memorial in St. Mary's Church, Old Newton, is an elaborate
fret-work memorial with three panels.
The centre panel commemorates the names of 17 men from Old Newton and Gipping
who lost their lives in the First World War. A close-up view of the centre
panel is shown below.
The left hand panel contains the words "FEAR NOT I AM THE FIRST AND THE
LAST".
The right hand panel contains the words "I AM THE RESURRECTION AND THE
LIFE".
I addition to the above memorial, there is also a hand-written
Roll of Honour in the church, commemorating the same 17 men.
One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on this
memorial.
We are very grateful to Peter
Clarke who has provided the photos of the memorial.
Private Robert Henry Buckle. 240760. 4th Battalion
the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 26 March 1918.
Enlisted Malton, Resided Normanby (Sinnington).
Commemorated on Panels 31 & 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.
(Although Soldiers Died in the Great War places Private Buckle
as residing in Normanby (Sinnington), he originally came from Suffolk.
The 1911 Census shows that he was born in 1898 in Bacton (Suffolk), but in
1911 was living in Ward Green, Old Newton, Stowmarket (Suffolk). He was working
as a Stock Boy on a farm. His father was William Buckle and his mother was
Ellen Buckle. When he died, he left his estate to his father William (ref.
Register of Soldiers Effects).
Presumably he moved to Yorkshire as an agricultural labourer.)
