The Oakenshaw War Memorial in Victoria Park - 1

There are two War Memorials for Oakenshaw, - one in St. Andrew's
Church and the other in Victoria Park. Both memorials carry the same names.
Photographs of the names commemorated on the Victoria Park memorial, and the
St. Andrew's Church memorial, are shown on the South
Bradford Local History Alliance website.
The Victoria Park memorial is located off Cleckheaton Road at
the point where Cross Road joins.
The memorial is that of a figure of a soldier wearing cap and greatcoat with
large pack, in mourning pose with head bowed and rifle reversed. The soldier
is on a square plinth with cornice and four stepped base. The First World
War commemorations (46) are on the sides of the plinth. The Second World War
commemorations (6) are on the upper steps.
Two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.
Private Irvine Lightowlers, 27594. 10th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Mark Lightowlers, of 3, Salthorn St., Oakenshaw, Bradford,
Yorks. Killed 12 July 1916. Aged 25.
Born Oakinshaw (Yorks), Enlisted Wike, Resided Oakinshaw.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private George Woodhead. 24712. 147th Battalion Machine
Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 27032 the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed
8 October 1917.
Enlisted Wyke, Resided Oakenshaw.
