The War Memorial in the Church of St. Mary Magdalene, North Ockendon is a greystone tablet with black and red incised inscription and a green leaf at each side. Below, a plain grey stone tablet flush to the above bearing an additional First World War isncription and name and the Second World War dedication and names. Below all is a varnished wooden shelf.
2ames are commemorated as having lost their lives in the First World War, and 2 in the Second World War.
Amongst the names of those who died is 1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.
Private George William Drake, 41227. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment,
Labour Corps - transferred to (374060) 144th Prisoner of War Coy. Son of George
and Emily Drake. Native of Cley Tey, North Ockendon, Essex. Died 23 October
1918. Aged 21.
Buried ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY.
Not shown in SDGW, but his Pension
Records Card showed thar he was
Born Claytye (Essex), Enlisted Romford (Essex), Resided North Ockenden (Essex).
The same card incorrectly showed that his former regiment was the DLI.
His brother Cpl John Thomas Drake of the Essex Regt., also fell and is commemorated on the memorial.
