The War Memorial Tablet in All Saints' Church, Newton-on-Ouse

The War Memorial in All Saints' Church, Newton-on-Ouse is a white marble tablet with a triangular pediment mounted on a rectangular grey marble tablet. The dedication and commemorations are in black and gold painted lettering. Two bayonets are carved in relief on the pediment with the initials "IHS" between them.
18 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War are commemorated on the memorial, together with 3 who lost their lives in the Second World War.
6 men who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial. One of these men is additionally commemorated on a family memorial in the church, together with his brother.
Private Henry Jackson. 220162. 8th Battalion the
East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 22790 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Jonathan
and Elizabeth Jackson, of Linton-on-Ouse, Yorks. Killed 26 September 1917.
Aged 38.
Born Linton-on-Ouse (Yorks), Enlisted Tollerton, Resided Linton-on-Ouse.
Buried TYNE COT CEMETERY.
Private Arthur Johnson. 28274. 9th Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Robert and Mary Johnson, of Rose Cottage, Scorborough,
nr. Beverley; husband of Janet Johnson, of 10, West Street, Thorne, nr.
Doncaster. Killed 25 February 1917. Aged 28.
Born Scorborough, Enlisted Shipton, Resided Benningbrough (Yorks).
Buried VLAMERTINGHE MILITARY CEMETERY.
The date of Arthur Johnson's death is incorrectly shown on the memorial
as 9 April 1917.
(Scorborough is a village near Beverley)
Private John William Pratt. 26724. 10th Battalion
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Sadler and Elizabeth Pratt, of Newton-on-Ouse,
York. Died 22 September 1916. Aged 29.
Born Newton-on-Ouse (Yorks), Enlisted Haxby (Yorks).
Buried DARTMOOR CEMETERY, BECORDEL-BECOURT.
Private Edwin Reynolds. 23635. 13th Battalion the
Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Stabler Reynolds and Jane Reynolds, of Newton-on-Ouse,
York. Killed 16 August 1916. Aged 28.
Born Newton-on-Ouse (Yorks), Enlisted York, Resided Newton-on-Ouse.
Buried MAROC BRITISH CEMETERY, GRENAY.
Private William Smith. 17223. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 29 October 1918.
Born Tollerton, Enlisted Darlington.
Buried COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY.
(Incorrectly shown on the memorial as being in the West Yorkshire Regiment.
Also, according to his Pension Record his father lived in Newton-on-Ouse.)
Private William Turner. 250689. 6th Battalion Durham
Light Infantry, formerly 28618 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of James and
Betsy Turner, of Linton-on-Ouse; husband of E. Turner, of Linton-on-Ouse,
nr. York. Killed 29 April 1917. Aged 42.
Born Linton-on-Ouse (Yorks), Enlisted Tollerton (Yorks), Resided Linton-on-Ouse.
Buried ETAPLES MILITARY CEMETERY.
