Newport War Memorial stands in Clarence Place at the very busy junction of Chepstow Road, Church Road and East Usk Road in Gwent, south Wales. It is the town’s main war memorial and takes the form of a 12 metre-high cenotaph, built of portland stone and surmounted on two steps made of Cornish granite.

As a cenotaph, the Newport War Memorial contains no names of the fallen. Those names are listed separately on an illuminated Roll of Honour, stored at Newport Library in John Frost Square.

4 women and 1511 men are commemorated in the Roll of Honour as having lost their lives in the First World War.

The names of those who lost their lives have been transcribed on a website for Newport's War Dead by Shaun McGuire, together with biographical information obtained from the local Press.

7 soldiers who served in the Yorkshire Regiment are listed in the Roll of Honour.

There is a biography of 2nd Lieutenant Howells in De Ruvigny's Roll of Honour, - see below.
However, this biography states that he enlisted with the West Yorkshire Regiment (Leeds Pals) on the outbreak of war. The biography then states that he was commissioned into the West Yorkshire Regiment in August 1918.
The Green Howards Gazette, though, has references to 2nd Lieut Courtney Philip Howells in;-
GH Gazette Vol XXV, No 295 p70 - October 1917
GH Gazette Vol XXV, No 295 p95 - January 1918
GH Gazette Vol XXVI, No 296 p86 - September 1918, wounded
GH Gazette Vol XXVI, No 304 p 57- November 1918, kia
From the above his commission into the Yorkshire Regiment would have been in August 1917.
He would have been attached to the KOYLI whilst serving with the Yorkshire Regiment, before being wounded and then later killed in action.
