The First World War Memorial in St. Matthew's Church, Newbottle, is a brass plaque mounted in a carved wooden frame. This is found at the West end of the church.
The plaque has 7 columns listing the names of those commemorated as having lost their lives in the war. The names are listed in alphabetical order. 108 names are commemorated on this plaque.
To the left of the plaque is a Roll of Honour listing 176 names of men who served in the First World War.

Above the FIrst World War Memorial is the West Window, of three divisions each of two lights. The window is dedicated "To the glory / of God and in / Memory of the / Men whose names / are recorded on / the tablet below".

Of the names on the memorial tablet, 6 are for soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.


Private William Bennett. 44928. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Elizabeth Bennett, of 8, Brompton Terrace, Philadelphia, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Killed 7 June 1918. Aged 20.
Born Newbottle, Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided New Errington.
Buried MONTECCHIO PRECALCINO COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Lance Corporal Thomas William Bewick. 14341. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Jane Bewick, of 45, Fenton Terrace, New Herrington, Fence Houses; husband of Violet Bewick, of 12, Pit Row, Philadelphia, Fence Houses, Co. Durham. Killed 14 July 1916. Aged 26.
Born New Herrington, Enlisted Shiney Row (Durham).
Buried PUCHEVILLERS BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Jacob Dowell. 13513. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of John George and Mary Dowell, of 5, Chapel Row, Philadelphia, Co. Durham. Killed 4 October 1916. Aged 20.
Born Newbottle (Houghton-le-Spring - Durham), Enlisted Shiney Row, Resided Fencehouses.
Buried BECOURT MILITERY CEMETERY.

Private David Elliott, 17255. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary Jane Elliott, of 1, High Pottery Yard, Newbottle, Co. Durham, and the late Robert Elliott. Killed 15 September 1916. Aged 19.
Born Sacriston (Durham), Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided Newbottle (Fencehouses).
Buried LONSDALE CEMETERY, AUTHUILLE.

Serjeant Arthur James Winyard Lamb. 14248. 8th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Lamb, of 6, Garden St., Newbottle, Co. Durham. Killed 28 October 1918. Aged 26.
Born Newbottle, Enlisted Shiney Row, Resided Newbottle.
Buried GIAVERA BRITISH CEMETERY, ARCADE.

Private James Malcolm. 18174. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 27 September 1916.
Born Burnmoor (Durham), Enlisted Houghton-le-Spring, Resided Grasswell (Fencehouses).
Buried REGINA TRENCH CEMETERY, GRANDCOURT.
(Richard Roberts,<richard.nsw@googlemail.com>, commented that the 1911 Census records that he, his wife and (at that time) two children were living in Newbottle. Also that his Pension Record confirms the name of his wife and children.)
