The War Memorial for New Brancepeth, Co. Durham

The War Memorial for New Brancepeth is located in front of the Village Hall, in Rock Terrace.
The memorial is a square pillar with columns at each corner surmounted by an urn. The memorial is made of red granite, and the commemorations are carved in gold lettering into the four faces. The memorial commemorates 93 men who lost their lives in the First World War, and 18 men who lost their lives in the Second World War.
New Brancepeth was in the heart of the Durham mining industry. The colliery at New Brancepeth was once known as the Sleetburn Colliery, and two of the Yorkshire Regiment soldiers (below) are shown by Soldiers Died in the Great War as being associated with "Sleetburn".
Seven soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.
Private Harry Bowman. 19491. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed 23 July 1916.
Born Durham, Enlisted Durham, Resided Sleetburn (co Durham).

Private Herbert Gill. 123162. 24th Battalion Machine
Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 205448 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late
Mr. and Mrs. Ralphe Gill, of Blue House, Chilton, Ferryhill, Co. Durham; husband
of Mary Alice Gill, of Ravensworth, Richmond, Yorks. Killed 21 March 1918.
Aged 24.
Born Piercebridge (Yorks), Enlisted New Brancepeth, Resided Esh Winning (Durham).
Commemorated on Panel 90 to 93, POZIERES MEMORIAL.
Lance Corporal William Hird, 18390. 7th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Killed on 29 September 1916.
Born Oakinshaw, Enlisted Durham, Resided Sleetburn (Durham).
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
Private Ernest Lewis. 205443. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of Henry and Ada Lewis, of 6, Bewley Terrace, New Brancepeth
Colliery, Durham. Killed 28 March 1918. Aged 25.
Enlisted Durham, Resided New Brancepeth.
Commemorated on Panels 31 & 32, POZIERES MEMORIAL.
Private Edward Mahan. 46718. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of James and Annie Mahan, of 3, Millfield Terrace, Ushaw Moor,
Co. Durham. Killed 12 September 1918. Aged 27.
Born Durham, Enlisted New Brancepeth, Resided Ushaw Moor (Co. Durham).
Buried GLAGEON COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private Frank Stringer, 18391. 9th Battalion Yorkshire
Regiment. Son of George and Rebecca Stringer, of 7, Co operative Terrace,
New Brancepeth Colliery, Durham. Killed 31 July 1916. Aged 22.
Born Brandon (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided New Brancepeth.
Commemorated on Pier and Face 3A & 3D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.
Private John Welsh. 21100.
7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 15364 D L I. Killed 23 April
1916.
Born Gilesgate (Durham), Enlisted Durham.
Buried BAILLEUL COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.
(It is possible that the "John Welsh" shown on the memorial is not
the above soldier. However, of the 32 "John Welsh" names shown in
SDGW the above soldier would appear to be the most likely.)
