The Victoria Workmen's Club in Murton, Co. Durham, was located in Church Street. The Club closed in February 2014.
The War Memorial, - a plaque set into a dark oak surround (7 feet 6 inches high x 5 feet 1 inches wide) with side columns and ornate pediments, was originally in the entrance hall of this club.

After the club closed the War Memorial was transferred to the Murton Heritage Centre, where it is now situated in a corridor on the upper floor.

Of the 68 names for the First World War on the memorial, 10 are for men of the Yorkshire Regiment. Details are as below.


Private Joseph Blakelock, 13615. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Died at home 5 August 1916.
Born Murton (Sunderland), Enlisted Seaham Harbour, Resided Murton Colliery.
Buried MURTON (HOLY TRINITY) CHURCHYARD.

Serjeant John Brown, 15712. 7th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Job and Isabel Brown, of 3, North St., Murton Colliery, Durham. Killed 15 December 1915. Aged 36.
Born East Murton, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Murton Colliery (Durham).
Buried BRANDHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.

Lance Corporal George Burt, 18282. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Lizzie Myers (formerly Burt), of 5, Railway St., Murton Colliery, Co. Durham. Killed 13 September 1916. Aged 38.
Born Longton (Staffs), Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Murton Colliery.
Commemorated Pier and Face 3 A and 3 D, THIEPVAL MEMORIAL.

Private Robson College MM, 12785. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 29 October 1918.
Born West Boldon, Enlisted Sunderland, Resided Murton Colliery.
Buried TEZZE BRITISH CEMETERY.

Private Thomas Graham. 16305, 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Husband of Isabella Williams (formerly Graham), of 12, Model St., Murton Colliery, Co. Durham. Killed 28 September 1916. Aged 34.

Lance Serjeant Robert Jackson, MM, 19313. 8th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Mentioned in Despatches. Killed 22 September 1917.
