The Minchinhampton War Memorial (Cross)

There are two War Memorials in Minchinhampton, - the Cross which stands in the Market Square and the nearby Market House (see photos below). The base of Cross carries plaques bearing the names of those commemorated as having lost their lives in both World Wars, and the Market House carries an engraved stone panel with similar commemorations.

A transcription of the names on both the Cross and the Market House has been made by 28th61st on the Military Images website. Amongst the names are those of two soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment.

Private Hollis Bailey. 42274. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 183724 RFA. Son of Mr. F. and Mrs. H. Smith, of Coigne Cottage, Minchinhampton, Stroud, Glos. Killed 2 April 1917. Aged 22.
Born Minchinhampton (Gloucester), Enlisted Stroud, Resided Minchinhampton.
Buried HENIN COMMUNAL CEMETERY EXTENSION.

Private Harold Jesse Creed. 35709. 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment,formerly 238824 Glos Yeomanry. Son of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Creed, of Box, Minchinhampton, Stroud, Glos. Killed 3 October 1918. Aged 19.
Born Wolverhampton, Enlisted Stroud, Resided Minchinhampton.
Buried WORMS (HOCHHEIM HILL) CEMETERY.
