The War Memorial for Medomsley is located at the junction of Fines Road and Front Street, to the left of the Churchyard gates.

The memorial is a Celtic Cross mounted on a two stepped base. The commemorations are incised onto the four faces on the sides of the plinth.

The memorial commemorates 129 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. The names of those commemorated have been transcribed on the website for the North East War Memorials Project. Photographs of the commemorations on the four faces are also shown on this website.

1 soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial. He is commemorated on the rear upper panel for men from Hamsterley Colliery.


Private Arthur William Fletcher. 42014. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 430 1st T R Battn. Son of William and Jane Fletcher, of Acorn House, High Westwood, Hamsterley Colliery, Co. Durham. Killed 2 October 1917. Aged 28.
Born Medomsley (Durham), Enlisted Consett, Resided Hamsterley Colliery.
Buried in LIJSSENTHOEK MILITARY CEMETERY.
