The First World War War Memorial for Meadowfield comprises 6 brass plaques beneath the Chancel Screen in St. John's Church.

The memorial commemorates 124 names of those who lost their lives in the First World War. The names of those commemorated have been transcribed on the website for the North East War Memorials Project. Photographs of the commemorations on the four faces are also shown on this website.

9 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on the memorial.


Private Edward Brown. 12523. 2nd Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment, transferred to (147480) Royal Engineers. Son of the late Edward and Margaret Brown, of New Brancepeth Colliery, Durham. Died at home 4 January 1921. Aged 31.
Buried BRANDON (ST. JOHN) CHURCHYARD.
(The medal rolls index card indicates that Edward Brown was a Serjeant. He enlisted on 2 September 1914, and served overseas. He was wounded in July 1916 and discharged (Silver War Badge) in June 1917. Possible that transfer to the Royal Engineers was to utilise his experience as a miner. In the 1911 Census he is shown as a Coal Hewer.)

Private George Albert Brown. 201938. 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William Thomas and Mary Brown of 5, Brandon Village, Durham. Killed 14 May 1917. Aged 21.
Born Witton Gilbert (Durham), Enlisted Croft-on-Tees, Resided Brandon (Durham).
Buried ST. NICOLAS BRITISH CEMETERY.

Lance Corporal George Sydney Clarke. 40156. 1st Battalion Northumberland Fusiliers, formerly 28026 the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Thomas William and Ada Clarke, of 21, East View, Meadowfield, Browney Colliery, Durham. Killed 14 July 1918. Aged 23.
Born Malton (Yorks), Enlisted Durham.
Buried COLOGNE SOUTHERN CEMETERY.
(L/Cpl G S Clarke is also commemorated on the Browney Colliery Institiute plaque.)

Private Thomas Dodds. 15633. 6th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of Mary Simpson (formerly Dodds), of 27, Frederick St. North, Meadowfield, Durham, and the late Martin Dodds. Killed 22 August 1915. Aged 22.
Born Brourney (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Brandon.
Commemorated on Panels 55 to 58, HELLES MEMORIAL.

Private William Henry Gent. 18112. 7th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 8 February 1917.
Born Metal Bridge (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Littleburn.

Corporal Thomas Hardy, 72933. 30th Battalion Machine Gun Corps (Infantry), formerly 20480 the Yorkshire Regiment. Military Medal (Belgium). Son of William and Hannah Hardy, of 256, Angus St., Langley Moor, Durham. Killed 24 March 1918. Aged 20.
Born Pittington (Durham), Enlisted Durham.
Commemorated Panel 90 to 93, POZIERES MEMORIAL.
(Younger brother of William Hardy.)

Private William Hardy, 14050. 9th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Hannah Hardy, of 256, Angus St., Langley Moor, Durham. Killed 10 July 1916. Aged 21.
Born Pittington, Enlisted Durham, Resided Boyne (Durham).
Buried SERRE ROAD CEMETERY No 2.
(Elder brother of Thomas Hardy.)

Private Edward Kelly, 15195. 6th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 9 October 1917.

Lance Corporal Thomas Richardson. 14040. 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Son of William and Mary E. Richardson, of Low Barns Farm, Meadowfield, Durham. Killed 23 April 1917. Aged 24.
Born Brandon (Durham), Enlisted Durham, Resided Brandon.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.
(The son of William and Mary E Richardson of Low Barns Farm, Meadowfield his full name was Thomas Edward Richardson but his middle name is not used in military records. However, it is shown as Thomas E Richardson on the Meadowfield Church memorial.)
