Inside the Church of St. Michael and All Angels in Maunby (a village between Northallerton and Thirsk) the War Memorial is a wooden plaque with a copper cross inset, into which are carved the names of those commemorated as having lost their lives in both World Wars.

7 members of the parish lost their lives in the First World War, and 2 in the Second World War.

3 soldiers who served with the Yorkshire Regiment are commemorated on this memorial.


Lance Corporal David Brydon. 41592. 9th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Formerly 25624 Hussars Regt. Killed 7 June 1917.
Born Kirby Wiske (Yorks), Enlisted Northallerton, Resided York.
Commemorated on Panel 33, YPRES (MENIN GATE) MEMORIAL.

Private Walter Scaife. 24410. 2nd Battalion Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 2 April 1917.
Born Maunby (Yorks), Enlisted Thirsk, Resided Maunby.
Commemorated on Bay 5, ARRAS MEMORIAL.

Private George Henry Winter. 220463. 1st Battalion East Yorkshire Regiment, formerly 5/3319 5th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Killed 20 October 1918. Aged 26.
Born Thirsk (Yorks), Enlisted Scarborough, Resided Darlington.
Buried ERQUELINNES COMMUNAL CEMETERY.
(George Henry Winter was born in Thirsk in Q1 1892. From the 1901 Census his parents were Peter and Ellen.
He was initially in the 5th Battalion Yorkshire Regiment (No 5/3319) before transferring to the 4th Battalion (No 203203).
The Yorkshire Regiment numbers are given in the Medal Rolls Index.
The Green Howards Gazette reports him, - No 3319, as having been wounded in July/August 1916. His transfer to the 4th Battalion would have been after this, before eventually transferring to the East Yorkshire Regiment.)
