The First World War Memorial in St. Cuthbert's Church, Marley Hill, is a brass plaque mounted on a wooden backboard. The commmeorations are inscribed in enamelled black lettering. Wreaths in low relied are at the top corners of the plaque.

50 names are commmeorated as having lost their lives in the First World War. A transcription of these names can be found on the Imperial War Museum's Register of War Memorials.

One soldier who served with the Yorkshire Regiment is commemorated on the memorial.


Private John William Pescod. 72463. 2nd Battalion West Yorkshire Regiment (Prince of Wales's Own), formerly 204742 4th Battalion the Yorkshire Regiment. Son of the late Joseph Pescod, of Glebe House, Sunniside, Newcastle-on-Tyne. Killed 24 April 1918. Aged 32.
Born Wickham (Co. Durham), Enlisted Blaydon-on-Tyne.
